Obstructive Sleeping Apnea And CPAP / CEPAP Facts

By Zaiden W Xavier

Obstructing sleeping apnea, snoring, loud snoring and similar conditions can be effectively treated using the device called CPAP / CEPAP. This stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. This device is designed to provide a continuous air flow through the airway, keeping it open for breathing.

Snoring, especially loud snoring, can cause different problems to people who snore, but also to people who live and sleep with them. Relaxed tissue such as tongue can narrow an airway. When air is passing through, it makes these sagging tissues vibrating. When the air is continuously pumped into the lungs, the passage remains open and snoring is eliminated.

Obstructive sleeping apnea is quite common. Blockages of the upper airway can be complete or partial, and they cause difficulty breathing air into the lungs. Patients sometimes stop breathing, or awake suddenly with a sensation of gasping or choking. This condition can become very serious.

If Obstructive Sleeping Apnea, or shortly OSA, episodes become frequent, this condition can cause heart problems such as arrhythmia. Other health issues can be related to reduced oxygen flow as well. CEPAP machine will successfully remove these problems, simply keeping air passages open. It is nearly 100% successful in treating moderate to severe cases of OSA.

Different OSA symptoms include troubles concentrating, forgetfulness, morning headaches, sleepiness, sore throat, loud snoring, restlessness and sexual dysfunction. Some people can become distressed or depressed. Sleeping partners will probably recognize some of these symptoms. Patients usually cannot recognize their problems.

This method is highly efficient in treating OSA. Mild but continuous air flow prevents blockages and keeps the passages open. Patients with other heart issues beside their sleeping problems can also benefit from using this device. Their blood pressure will be significantly lower. There are some cases that still need to be surgically solved.

CEPAP uses different types of masks. Nasal mask is most commonly used. It can cause some side-effects such as skin irritations, nasal congestion, ear infections and sneezing. Some people even have nightmares. Most of those side-effects will disappear soon, and some can be eased using nasal sprays or humidifiers.

CPAP / CEPAP devices won't cure your medical condition, but they will bring you relief and ease your life. Although nasal mask may be quite uncomfortable at first, you will soon adapt to it. Good night sleep is important for your health and the general quality of your life, and if you must handle the occasional nuisance, it's worth it.
