Being anxious - which often is a result of a stressful life - is physically bad for people. Modern science has proved that happiness is important to maintaining health. Anxious thoughts cause a the release of 'flight or fight' hormones that have negative effects on total body health. Years of such stress can cause mental and physical breakdown. Mental anguish can harm every relationship a person has, including the one with God.

Most of us have anxious thoughts. The problem comes when we hold on to these worries. They can dominate our waking and even sleeping hours. There is no time for worship, communion with God, joy, and peace when our thoughts are on troublesome circumstances. God, in His Word and by His example, has shown us how to cope with daily burdens.

God made us. Therefore He knows our weaknesses, just as He knows that stress is bad for us. God asks us to turn our worries over to Him and to trust Him to bring all things to a good conclusion. Jesus defeated sin and death on the cross, and He promises to be with us as we live in this fallen world.

Surrender is the key principle that makes it possible for us to enjoy God's peace and allow Him to work in our lives. He has given us free will, and if we choose to hold on to troubles, He lets us do so. Mature Christians know that giving God control is always the best policy, and so they do it sooner rather than later.

We can only surrender if we trust God to know our circumstances and want the best for us. Trusting Him with our finances, our families, our personal safety, and our future means that we are free to praise and thank Him for provision and grace. A lack of trust is really a lack of belief that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He promises.

This turning over of control is not easy. Many people never do learn to trust and obey. Human nature leads all people to worry and fear, but our lives are not meant to be ruled by human traits. Fortunately, God gives us the gift of faith - which is really belief in Him - and much evidence of His care and His goodness.

Christian anxiety can be the trigger for a deeper and richer understanding of God and His father-care for His children. His Word is filled with love for all people. Jesus has won the victory for every living being, so we can truly relax and enjoy fellowship with the creator of the universe. Letting God do His will for us is so much better than futile worrying.

 NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A psychology technique that encourages patients to think positively and gain confidence helped some with high blood pressure and heart disease stick to medication and exercise goals, according to new research.
But the strategy -- known as positive affect and self-affirmation, or just positive affirmation -- didn't always lead to obvious health benefits. And it's unclear whether any improvements in lifestyle would have continued after the extra encouragement stopped.
"In general, the idea is that as people feel positively about what they're doing, they're more likely to be energized and sustain that over time," said Dr. Geoffrey Williams from the University of Rochester, New York, who wrote a commentary published with three new studies on positive affirmation in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
The studies addressed health goals in three groups of patients. In one, African-Americans with high blood pressure were encouraged to stick more closely to their medication plan. In the other two, people who had asthma or who'd recently had a stent inserted into blocked arteries agreed to exercise more.
All patients were given workbooks and made contracts with doctors about their goals.
Half of the participants in each study -- the positive-thinking groups -- also received small gifts in the mail, and were encouraged to incorporate things that made them happy into their everyday lives and to think about proud moments when they were having trouble sticking to their goals.
In the high blood pressure study, the extra encouragement led to limited success. Slightly more people in the positive-thinking group took their medications; in total, that group took 42 percent of its recommended doses, compared to 36 percent in the "control" group. But there was no difference in changes in blood pressure between the groups after a year.
The researchers calculated that 16 hypertensive patients would need to get the extra support, encouragement and gifts for one more to adhere to a medication plan.
The intervention had no clear effect on physical activity in asthma patients. Regardless of whether or not they were given the encouragement and told to think positively, the patients burned an extra 400 calories per week on average by the end of the year-long study.
There was some benefit in patients who received extra exercise encouragement after having a stent inserted. More than half of them surpassed the goal of burning an extra 336 calories per week after a year, compared to just over one-third of patients who were taught about exercise, but didn't get positive affirmation.
"Overall it's safe to say that self-affirmation... can help patients to engage in healthy lifestyle behaviors," said Dr. Gbenga Ogedegbe from the New York University School of Medicine, part of the NYU Langone Medical Center, and the lead researcher of the blood pressure study.
The theory of improving health and lifestyle through upbeat thinking is related to the "positive psychology" movement, which encourages the study of happiness, rather than focusing only on mental illness.
Ogedegbe said it's possible that combined with other behavioral strategies and improvements in care, positive thinking and affirmation can lead to actual reductions in blood pressure in some hypertensive patients, as well as other health benefits. But it's unclear from this study if that's the case.
One limit of all the new studies, according to Williams, is that they didn't track whether patients continued to take their medication and exercise after the extra encouragement and gifts stopped -- which would be important if the strategy was going to be useful in the real world.
"We need people to be able to carry this out themselves after we have (finished) working with them," Williams told Reuters Health.
Ogedegbe said that he and his colleagues are currently looking at how well the strategy works in combination with other health interventions, as well as how costly it would be outside of a research study.

African-American women, on the other hand, have a 6% lower incidence of new cancer diagnoses, but a 16% greater death rate than Caucasian women.

The steepest fall in death rates from cancer over the past two decades were seen in African-American men.

The authors of both reports say that existing knowledge about combating cancer needs to be applied across all segments of society, especially in lower income households.

Tobacco use and obesity are estimated to be the two main cancer-causing factors for 2012. Tobacco use is estimated to cause one third of cancer deaths over the coming twelve months, and obesity, poor nutrition and physical inactivity another third.

Even though overall cancer rates and cancer death rates have dropped over the last two decades, there has been a corresponding rise in those two rates for some rarer cancers.

The following rarer cancers have seen incidence and total deaths increase over the last two decades:

  • Kidney cancer. Rates rose in all groups, except for American Indian/Alaska Native men.
  • Thyroid cancer. Rates rose in all groups, except for American Indian/Alaska Native men.
  • Liver cancer. Rates rose among Caucasian, African-American and Hispanic males, as well as African-American females.
  • Esophageal adenocarcinoma. Rates increased among Caucasian and Hispanic adult males.
  • Melanoma of the skin
  • Some throat cancers (linked with HPV infection). The increase was only among Caucasians.
Experts are not sure why rates have increased in these cancers. Some are associated with higher current rates of obesity (liver, kidney, pancreas and esophagus cancers). Perhaps these cancer are being detected earlier - this could push figures up.

What Is Cancer? What Causes Cancer?

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth. There are over 100 different types of cancer, and each is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected.
Cancer harms the body when damaged cells divide uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors (except in the case of leukemia where cancer prohibits normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream). Tumors can grow and interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, and they can release hormones that alter body function. Tumors that stay in one spot and demonstrate limited growth are generally considered to be benign.

More dangerous, or malignant, tumors form when two things occur: 





  1. a cancerous cell manages to move throughout the body using the blood or lymph systems, destroying healthy tissue in a process called invasion
  2. that cell manages to divide and grow, making new blood vessels to feed itself in a process called angiogenesis.
When a tumor successfully spreads to other parts of the body and grows, invading and destroying other healthy tissues, it is said to have metastasized. This process itself is called metastasis, and the result is a serious condition that is very difficult to treat.
How cancer spreads
- scientists reported in Nature Communications (October 2012 issue) that they have discovered an important clue as to why cancer cells spread. It has something to do with their adhesion (stickiness) properties. Certain molecular interactions between cells and the scaffolding that holds them in place (extracellular matrix) cause them to become unstuck at the original tumor site, they become dislodged, move on and then reattach themselves at a new site.
The researchers say this discovery is important because cancer mortality is mainly due to metastatic tumors, those that grow from cells that have traveled from their original site to another part of the body. Only 10% of cancer deaths are caused by the primary tumors.
The scientists, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, say that finding a way to stop cancer cells from sticking to new sites could interfere with metastatic disease, and halt the growth of secondary tumors.
In 2007, cancer claimed the lives of about 7.6 million people in the world. Physicians and researchers who specialize in the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer are called oncologists.

What causes cancer?

Cancer is ultimately the result of cells that uncontrollably grow and do not die. Normal cells in the body follow an orderly path of growth, division, and death. Programmed cell death is called apoptosis, and when this process breaks down, cancer begins to form. Unlike regular cells, cancer cells do not experience programmatic death and instead continue to grow and divide. This leads to a mass of abnormal cells that grows out of control.
