Individuals that are given this dual job title, are required to do two different things. They work in obstetrics and gynecology fields. Obstetrics has to deal with working with pregnant women. While, gynecology entails working with females as well. However, the work that is performed is to help treat and diagnose problems with the female reproductive system.

The steps that you need to take in order to be able to work in this field, should begin while you are in high school. If you have made up your mind about what you want to be, once you have completed school, it is important to begin preparing for your future, early on. While in high school, you should make it a point to concentrate on taking science related classes.

Taking these classes, can help an individual prepare to be accepted into a medical program through a university or college. While studying to obtain a bachelor's degree, the individual will need to focus on a variety of different science related classes. Most of the classes will be regarding the human body. A lot of experience with the sciences will be required, in order for an individual to be able to get accepted to a medical training school.

Altogether, you will need to devote eight years of your life to school. The first four years of schooling, an individual will be pursuing a bachelor's degree. Once the individual graduates from the college or university they have decided to get their bachelor's degree from, then they will need to attend an additional school, which is their medical school.

Once your training for your bachelor's degree has been completed, then you will need to attend a medical school. The medical school training will take four years to complete. During this time, as a student, you will be dissecting cadavers and learning more about the human body, as it deteriorates and works.

Once the residency period has been completed, an individual has the opportunity to specialize in order subspecialities as well. An individual is not considered to be an OBGYN, until they have successfully completed their bachelor program, medical school, and their three year residency. It is only after these three things have been completed, that an individual can treat patients, without the assistance of another trained medical professional.

With eight years of schooling, plus an additional three years of working in either a hospital or clinic, may seem like a long time to devote to entering into a career.
