Cleaning Your Freezer After Experiencing Power Loss

By John Brown

Power outages often happen during the summer when the use of air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers are especially high, meaning the possibility of a door being accidentally left open or ajar is also higher. The mess that develops is no fun to clean!

One common and unfortunate side effect of even the best fridge freezer being left open is the smell of spoiling food. If a freezer was left open for a long time without you noticing it is most likely that the summer heat defrosted your fish and meats and by the time you found it there is nothing but a slimy stinky mess left to clean up. If that sounds familiar, following these simple steps could help you get your freezer smelling fresh again in no time.

1. To begin with, take out all the parts that you can from the fridge or freezer. This includes drawers, doors, shelves and everything else that was designed to be removeable. Wash these parts in warm water and soap. Also, clean the insides of the fridge giving extra caution to the door liner and gaskets. Rinse and leave to dry.

2. Use a baking soda solution to clean the insides of the fridge. To make this solution, just mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with four cups, or 1 litre, of water.

3. Baking soda & activated charcoal absorb odors, so if your fridge or freezer still smells rank pour some plain baking soda or place some charcoal into large flat pans and put them in the freezer to absorb any residual smells. Leave the freezer empty and run as highest possible setting for several days or as long as necessary.

4. Newspaper can be crumpled and packed into the fridge or freezers' shelves to also reduce excess smells. Place a cup of water onto the uppermost shelf or sprinkle some water onto the newspaper itself for moisture. Increase the freezer or fridge's temperature to its maximum. This method will normally take between 5 to 6 days.

5. Place freshly ground coffee in small containers in the freezer, turn the freezer temperature down to the lowest temperature possible and run it like that for at least a few days.

If you have tried the above methods your freezer still smells of spoiled meat it is possible that the drippings have leaked into the machines insulation or gaskets. If that is the case you will need to call a refrigerator technician to help replace the insulation and liner.
