There are many people who utilize the services of a dentist for everything from cavities to gum disease to problems with the alignment of the jaw. Dentists offer the invaluable services of protecting and preserving teeth. In extreme cases, they also offer services that prevent bacterial infections, which can lead to body systems becoming septic. There are a host of services offered at Sacramento Dental that can help to not only make your smile more beautiful, but may also preserve your smile for the duration of your life.

A Sacramento family dentist can offer many services, from restoring and saving teeth, to performing procedures for purely esthetic reasons. Many people seek the services of a dentist for procedures such as fillings, veneers, tooth shaping, bridges, gum lifts, and even braces. These procedures are very functional in nature and are often required to keep teeth and gums healthy. However, there are cosmetic procedures that are routinely performed by Sacramento Dental as well. The most common procedure performed in most dental offices for purely esthetic reasons is tooth whitening, more commonly known as bleaching. Knowing of its popularity, what is tooth whitening and how does it work? What are the differences between at-home systems and in-office systems? How much does whitening generally cost?

Tooth whitening, which can be performed by a Sacramento family dentist, involves the use of peroxide-based materials to whiten teeth. Prior to any whitening procedure, whether at-home or in-office, patients should have all cavities filled and gums should be healthy. This is due to the fact that often times whitening procedures produce sensitivity. If cavities are present, or the gums are unhealthy, unbearable sensitivity and/or pain can result. Tooth whitening occurs when peroxide gels are applied to the teeth to oxidize stains. With tooth whitening, teeth can become four to six shades lighter.

In-office tooth whitening systems use 35% hydrogen peroxide gels in conjunction with high intensity light to whiten teeth. With some in-office systems, the gums must be covered in order to protect them from damage. With other systems, this step is not necessary, as there is minimal risk of damage. Once the gels are placed on the teeth, a laser or plasma light is used to activate the peroxide which then oxidizes stains on the teeth. This process generally takes about an hour to complete. This generally costs between $500 - $1,100, depending on the procedure and the type of laser used.

At-home systems most often use 10 - 20% carbamine peroxide gels to oxidize stains. Because the procedure is done at home, the gel does not require the use of a laser in order for oxidization to occur; however, the results are often less effective then in-office procedures. A Sacramental family dentist makes impressions of the mouth and then has trays made. The patient fills the soft mouth trays with a ribbon of gel each night and wears the trays while sleeping. Most whitening will occur within one or two weeks. Trays may be worn for up to six weeks. This generally costs between $400 - $800 for trays to be made and all necessary gels for one full course of treatment.
