The Importance Of Bladder Cancer Research

By Allyson Whitley

There are numerous reasons behind bladder cancer research, but one stands out from the rest, and that is saving lives. World wide researchers and doctors in university hospitals and medical centers are working hard to discover new testing and treatment methods for this disease. They have come up with a new type of surgical procedure, and a few different types of therapies in order to help patients live longer, stronger lives during and after diagnosis.

One of the hypothesis concerning testing early are certain urine tests. These tests would provide doctors and researchers with the information they need to know regarding cell development and placement in and around the infected area. These tests could help diagnose this type of illness at its early stages, and allow for doctors to begin treatments faster, eliminating the need for surgery and decreasing the chances of the disease spreading through out the body.

Testing for diseased cells at an early stage would allow doctors to catch this disease before it has the chance to spread or cause more damage to the patient. With the technology today, it is important for this research to be conducted so physicians can implement the proper instruments and procedures to better save lives. Saving lives is what doctors are suppose to do, with the help of researchers they are able to create action plans and test different treatment options to better the outcomes of cancer patients.

One of the treatment options that are being researched is that of diet change and supplement introduction in certain patients. By changing the diet of a patient and having them take certain supplements on a regular basis, scientist and physicians believe that they can help control the recurrence of this illness in certain organs. A list of these vital organs include, the urethra, bladder, and kidneys, to name a few.

Along with supplements and diet changes, researchers are also exploring new and different therapy options for patients with different levels of this illness. These therapies would be less invasive, more efficient, and help minimize recovery time. These treatment options include but are not limited to, intravesical therapy, photodynamic therapy, targeted therapies, and gene therapies.

The surgery that is being researched all over the world is that of robotic assisted surgery. This technique allows the surgeon to work out of a sanitized surgical station and control a robotic device. The patient would only have a couple minor one inch incisions with less healing time as oppose to larger incisions with longer, more painful incisions.

The different therapies being researched include intravesical therapy, photodynamic therapy, targeted therapies, and gene therapies. Each involve killing diseases cells without destroying healthy cells, and each are still being tested. If these therapies were to be approved, researchers indicate that there would be less loss and more gain in this field of medicine.

With the help of bladder cancer research, many new technologies and therapy options are being discovered. These options are said to be able to help patients live longer lives after being diagnosed. To learn more about this topic and those like it, speaking with a physician or researching online will prove beneficial.
