Negative Effects Of Nuclear Energy

By Laura Brown

One of the advantages of nuclear operations is energy production. It is also said to be a safer process for generation of electricity. You must have heard about different kinds of controversies on the nuclear energy. If you do, then you must know a lot of things about different disasters such as the one in Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. These events have only proven that the negative effects of nuclear energy are threatening to different lives and the environment.

Nuclear Meltdowns

The most damaging, scariest, controversial and deadliest disadvantage of nuclear energy is the possibility of a meltdown. This can be too dangerous as it would look like it can turn the whole city and town to ashes. Some energy power plants of different forms can provide the same scenario but the only difference would be the radiation. These radiations are those that come out after a meltdown and it can contaminate the city and other neighboring towns for decades.

Meltdown happens when the process went out of control and there is no coolant that will carry the heat that is being generated out of the core. Even if the fission reaction was stopped by the control rods, the split uranium particles inside can still release the radiation. Thousands of death will be a result of a meltdown and it will cost decades for the natural air to go back in the affected area. It is also a big question about where the nuclear plants should take their fuels after being burnt as the dosages can still be harmful for humans.

The Radioactive or Nuclear Waste

Nuclear wastes are being produced everyday and this is something that everyone should be cautious about. Since there is a few chance for a meltdown to take place, nuclear waste produces more everyday threats on the lives of human and other living things in the community. This could be released from handling, transporting and storing the by-products being produced in the process. In order to reduce the threats or possibly eliminate it, the radioactive wastes must be well secured and kept in an isolated place but the issue is that, a suitable location is very hard to find.

Methods on reusing the spent fuel rods are available and are being taught but the government is discouraging it due to security risks and other concerns. The different nuclear power plants on different parts of the U.S. are keeping their own wastes on-site. Taking it away from reach and exposure to humans can save lives from genetic deformation and many kinds of cancer. As of today, many have suggested to bury the wastes underground but no response is being provided yet.
