Different Reasons Why People Should Preserve Florida Shipwrecks

By Celina Heath

Few things are as exciting and challenging a window to look through and study underwater marine life and the past as the many Florida shipwrecks abandoned deep in the ocean. Whether you are scuba diving just for a quiet pleasurable day away from it all or going hundreds of feet down doing important research, these deep sea classrooms offer beauty and sights few other areas can compare with. Each downed ship holds a wealth of information and history all out there for the taking.

Many of these renowned ships were essential to Florida's future economy. Not surprisingly, others were famed pirate ships that canvassed the seas searching for weaker vessels carrying valuables and human beings to work on their ships or sell for the slave trade. Some sailing ships were only exploring and had the bad luck of sailing into very bad storms. Some were made into war ships by notable countries through the years and fighting in different wars.

The ships' basic designs were different as well. Some were great Spanish galleons crafted when hardwood was plentiful all over northern Europe. Some were great steam boats that were crafted to move from one part of the world to another part over the ocean. Some were smaller simpler ocean fairing barges, built to carry valuables from one country to a different one.

All of these old ships have a wealth of different archaeological resources which cannot be found in other places. The various building designs could be studied and carefully documented for future generations of college students. Loading and trading cargo manifests as well as company permits issued by US states and foreign countries are also important historically.

Even though a lot of these old vessels are poached on by many unscrupulous people most are protected by maritime law. They are also protected by different Florida state laws. Some of the old Spanish fleet ships are further protected as being the sovereign property of the Spanish government.

Saving these sailing ships are an important step in saving keeping our marine ecology growing and thriving. After they have stabilized on the sea floor, they become a growing part of the environment. This ecosystem of growing marine life becomes a larger part of the ocean floor as it keeps growing larger with an abundance of ocean life sustaining it.

When people dive down and swim around these ecosystems, the amount and kinds of life are as different as anything they will likely ever see anyplace else. Sea sponges, crabs, fish, clams, lobsters, octopi and sharks thrive inside these old past relics. Visiting these ancient places are an inspirational and educational experience for young or old people alike.

This is an important responsibility for people to shoulder long term and short term. It is critical to see that as more Florida shipwrecks get saved everyone wins. With the assistance of park services some activists, academic and local communities the list saved sailing ships becomes longer every day. These sailing ships possess a history that belongs to everyone and when they are lost they are gone forever.
