Why is Speech Therapy Important?

By Larry Murry

Our day-to-day life is highly affected by the way we speak. Although we don't realize it, the way we talk actually affects how others relate to us. Because it appears typical and normal, our speech is among the things we usually take for granted. What we fail to see is that not all people are blessed with this gift. Certain people are born with speech impairments while others only acquire them from accidents. The bottom line is that these people are not blessed enough to experience the gift of speech forever. Fortunately, speech therapy was invented in order to support unlucky individuals like them.

One field of medicine that deals with the improvement of speech and language afflictions is called speech therapy. Speech and language ailments, like other kinds of conditions, can be found in lots of different kinds. These ailments are diagnosed and addressed by professionals called speech and language therapists (SLT). There is no immediate fix for speech defects. In order for a continuing improvement, speech therapy must be an ongoing process. For patients to be able to perform as normally as possible, they will need to see their therapists at least two to three times a week.

Over the years, there have been more and more demand for SLTs. Unlike a teacher or a doctor that can only practice in school or in the hospitals, SLT's are not limited to one work environment. They can practice in hospitals, schools, health centers, or perhaps even in their patient's homes. In fact, they are not confined to a single company! I even have a friend that works in a hospital, a health care clinic, and home service simultaneously. Most of them are also self-employed, so they normally have their own times.

Speech therapy is not an easy job. Because a lot of clients are diagnosed with significant afflictions, you would need to be very calm and persevering. For you to last in this occupation, you would have to be dedicated in what you do. Not all speech therapists can be tolerant and levelheaded with their clients. As a matter of fact, a few can be insensitive and disinterested regarding the progress of their patients. It is therefore important to select a therapist that is passionate and accomplished in his or her career. It is also vital that the therapist has a pleasing and gentle personality.

Our speech is a gift that we almost always take for granted. We don't recognize that there are people unfortunate enough not to be blessed with it. Fortunately, speech therapy enables such individuals to in some way have the capacity to communicate as normally as possible. Not only are their oral abilities developed but their self-confidence are also increased. Nonetheless, we have to be careful in selecting the therapist to go to, since not all of them are passionate about their clients and their vocation.
